7.9 new Facebook registrations per second

248 million people joined Facebook in 2010, TechCrunch reports today.

Through research carried out by CandyTech, it was found that the social content generation organisation achieved an incredible 7.9 new registrations per second last year. The numbers swell total membership to 585 million users worldwide.

Czech company, CandyTech help companies create Facebook marketing campaigns and then produce infographics that measure the campaign’s success. Via their statistics portal, Social Bakers, they have gathered information on Facebook itself, turning up some amazing results.

Geographically, the USA makes up the largest proportion of users but in second place is Indonesia, with 32.1 million members with the UK third with 28.4 million and Turkey in fourth place with 24.1 million.

Michael Jackson, though deceased, remains the most popular celebrity on the website, his fan site boasts 26.2 million fans, though Lady Gaga is hot on his heels with 25.7 million. Coca Cola is the biggest brand.

The biggest surprise came when the infographic looked at how old the average Facebook user is. Geekygadgets.com shows that broken down by age, the biggest user demographic is the 18 – 24 age group, no surprise there. However, the biggest growth in registration was in the 65 years plus category. This rose by a staggering 124% and now there are 12.5 million tech savvy pensioners with Facebook profiles worldwide.
