I blogged a while back, I think…yes….yes I did about the AdWords editor, hands down one of the most useful PPC tools for AdWords accounts.
In fact, it’s so important a whole chat was dedicated to it yesterday on twitter with the hashtag #ppcchat for all the cool PPC kids. Trust me, there are loads of us.
One thing that came up was about when multiple people are working on an account at any given time, what is the most important thing to consider?
Easy.
It is without a shadow of a doubt, in my mind anyway the ‘Get recent changes’ tab. Located, as if you didn’t know, just under File, top left of the editor.
Here:

In fact I believe in it’s importance so strongly I have mild OCD about it. This stems from working on accounts as a team where it was drummed in to me the importance of getting these changes.
Why?
As usual, I’ll tell ya.
Say I am working on the account, maybe adding negative keywords or updating adtext and someone else is in there updating campaign budgets and maybe…even….let’s say building a remarketing campaign, both happily ppc-ing away.
My colleague finishes, uploads his new shiny remarketing campaign. I finish too but assume no one else has touched the account since I downloaded it an hour ago. I just post all my stuff without updating my version of the account.
*To clarify, for my own sanity this would never ever happen, just as a horribly horrific example*
Well as I have never downloaded their remarketing campaign and other changes my account version doesn’t have it. My upload has just overwritten all of their work. Not so amusing.
To rectify this they would have to open their editor and download the latest version of the account, and then re-upload it with their new campaign.
Annoying within an agency, but if this is say is an account which has multiple users working on it, you could completely overwrite their work and they might not even notice.
Bad if they have changed all the budget caps or bid costs and you don’t get recent changes, overwrite it all with your old crusty version, bit of a shock when they next log in and see how much it’s spent ‘But I changed that budget cap!’ or worse example if they have paused the account.
So. It’s important. Get in the habit of before you post ANYTHING to get recent changes. Make the world a better place.
