Google Base becomes Google Merchant Center

The Google Base blog announced the launch of the new Google Merchant Center. This is another name change for this part of Google, having been Froogle and Google Product Search and Google Shopping in the past.

Specifically for product items rather than anything else in Google Base, this presumably points to the fact that extra features will be added to the site. Interestingly, the Merchant Center name is a bit of a throwback to the Froogle days, when it was caled Froogle Merchant Center. There is some confusion with the name also being used for Google Checkout Merchant Center.

Logins to the new site are with the same username and password as your Google Base account, and all product feeds are now transferred over. In fact, logging in today, the blue button actually now says “Log in to Merchant Center”.

There seem to have been a few teething issues with the changeover (we had a few uploads that didn’t work over the past 24 hours), but these seem to be resolved now.
